1. Introduction

Canada has implemented a favorable update for work permit holders looking to study without a study permit. As of December 6, 2024, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has extended this temporary policy until June 27, 2026. This offers work permit holders a chance to further their education while working in Canada.

2. Overview of the Policy

The updated guidelines allow individuals who applied for work permits before June 7, 2023, to study in Canada without requiring a student visa. This is a continuation of the 2023 policy aimed at simplifying access to education for foreign workers.

Key highlights:

  • Applicable to work permit holders and renewal applicants with valid authorizations.

  • Valid until the earlier of work permit expiration or policy end date (June 27, 2026).

3. Eligibility Criteria

To study without a student visa, you must:

  • Have applied for your work permit before June 7, 2023.

  • Hold valid work authorization, including during renewals.

  • Continue adhering to the conditions of your primary study program (if enrolled).

4. Duration of Study Without a Study Permit

You can continue studying in Canada under this policy until:

  • Your work permit expires.

  • Your work permit renewal application is rejected.

  • The policy concludes on June 27, 2026.

5. Required Documents

Work permit holders must provide these documents to their Designated Learning Institution (DLI) as proof of exemption:

  • Valid Canadian work permit.

  • Acknowledgment of Receipt (AOR) for work permit renewal applications.

  • Work authorization letter.

  • Email confirmation from IRCC regarding study permit exemption.

6. Impact on Canada PR Chances
